"I am a 49 year old woman who started cycling as a hobby in 2017. I was told by many that I was quite a good cyclist but that didn’t make it past my ears. I did however want to improve and have some discipline around my newly acquired sport. I had two separate coaches but instead of feeling empowered and stronger, I was left feeling drained, unsupported, in simple words, like a loser. Some people find sports coaches because they are training for a specific event, the next race, the next Ironman, the next triathlon. They are keen aspiring athletes who seek expertise to improve their performance and improve consistently. That wasn’t me. I was cycling because it gave me happiness, connection and a sense of fulfilment. I needed to improve my cycling so I could continue riding with people I enjoyed cycling with, climbing hills with amazing views, and, yes, perhaps daring for a challenge along the way. But I didn’t have the confidence, the knowledge, the discipline, the fearlessness that is required for consistent improvement. And to add to that, I started feeling that my body was changing, my eating habits, my mood and my belief in myself was decreasing. I met Denise at my cycling club and witnessed her daring approach to everything in life with deep admiration. I received feedback from her in a way that was always positive and empowering and seem to dig deep into the root of anything that was challenging me. And I learnt about age and women’s hormones in our chats. I used to thrive after our interactions. Denise, will you coach me? Those words have genuinely changed my life. My legs can spin and can climb, so it seems. But it’s only thanks to Denise that I now know what they are capable of. With Denise’s help I discovered how to find empowerment in my fear, how to tap into my inner potential, how to celebrate every step along the way, how to see victory in every stroke on the bike. I found resilience, and the most important of all, I found the joy that I was seeking, the confidence to simply try, the desire to try many times and get it wrong many times until one day I get it right. Denise focused a lot of time at the beginning to make sure I went deep into my motivation, to understand how my mind operates, what to do when I have doubts, how to keep me on track. Once you are empowered from the core, the technical rides, the feeding, it’s all just part of the ride. Alongside developing my mental strength, Denise has provided me with a very holistic approach to training, full of creativity and variety to keep it interesting whilst developing all the necessary elements. From nutrition, to age related (peri menopausal) issues, stretching, TRX, yoga, mobility, HRV, there is always something new to explore and learn whilst keeping the main theme consistent. I was thrilled to have ridden 50km in 2017. I have now signed up to Mallorca 225, with the fear by my side, my courage next to it, and the right mindset to do whatever I am told to have the best shot at achieving my goal. And I know I wouldn’t be here without Denise. Thank you for helping me find my inner hero Denise. I will be forever grateful."
